The luminous, mesmerizing paintings of Laurie Nye are centered on notions of place, light, and the landscape. “I talk about all other themes through that subject matter,” says the Memphis-born, Los Angeles artist. The CalArts MFA graduate has quietly built a steady following for her dazzling, tapestry-like canvases that hover in a space between direct observation, myth, and subconscious memory.
Now, after a transformative three-month fellowship in New Mexico, Nye is making her highly anticipated New York solo debut with Uffner & Liu gallery in the city’s Lower East Side neighborhood. Titled “The Battlefield Where the Moon Says I Love You,” a nod to the Southern Gothic poet Frank Stanford, the exhibition marks a major career milestone, following two sold-out solo shows in 2024 and 2025 with Philip Martin Gallery in Los Angeles.
